今年度初のレアーレキッズオンライン交流会は英語で開催！REALE Kids Online Meeting In English!

9月17日、小学3～4年生の日本のレアーレキッズとネパールのレアーレキッズが、オンラインで交流会を開催しました。

オンライン交流会の大きな狙いはふたつ。

日本とネパール、離れてはいるけれど、同じレアーレファミリーの仲間であることを感じてもらうこと。

全く違う環境に住む子どもたちが交流することで、それぞれが視野を広げ、共に価値観をアップデートしてもらうこと。

そして、今回は、そこに、英語でのコミュニケーションという大きなチャレンジが加わりました。

昨年のオンライン交流会では、通訳を挟んでの交流でした。
しかし、今回からは、できる限り、自分たちでわかる範囲の英語を駆使しての交流にトライしてもらいました。

というのも、日本のレアーレキッズたちは、7月から週に1回オンラインの英語クラスに参加しており、ネパールの子どもたちとの交流会で、習ったことを実際に使うという体験をしてほしかったからです。

一方のネパールの子どもたちは、幼稚園から英語教育を受け、国語以外の教科を英語で学んでいます。

そのため、英語でのコミュニケーションは難しくないように思われますが、読み書きが中心の学校の勉強では、日常会話を英語でする機会は意外とありません。

日本の子どもたちを前にすると恥ずかしがって喋れなくなる子もいるので、勉強としてとしての英語ではなく、コミュニケーションのツールとしての英語に触れてもらう機会にしてもらいたいと思っています。

さて、当日の交流会ですが、まず、日本とネパールの常識や文化の違いを知ってもらおうと、アニッシュコーチが準備してくれたのは、ネパールの子どもたちの制服の紹介です。
実は、ネパールの小学校は、私立でも公立でも制服があるのが普通なのです。

一方の日本では、小学校は制服がないことがほとんど。

「え、日本は制服ないの？」

ネパールの子どもたちにとっては、日本の子どもたちが私服で学校に通っているということは、ちょっとしたカルチャーショックのようでした。

その後、日本とネパールのキッズが一人ずつ前に出て、英語での会話にチャレンジ！

名前は何て言うの？
何歳なの？
好きな科目は？
好きな色は？

などなど、コーチの助けも借りながら、英語でのコミュニケーションにトライしました。

昨年は、通訳に頼りっぱなしだった日本の子どもたちですが、今回は、いくらか英語で伝えることができました。

この体験をきっかけに、日本の子どもたちの英語への興味が少し変わったようにも感じました。
英語は使ってこそ、上達するもの。

これからも月1回くらいのペースで、交流会を開催していきたいと考えています。

REALE Kids Online Meeting In English! 

On 17SEP we held an online exchange meeting between REALE kids in Japan and Nepal.There are two main purposes.
One is to let both children feel they are in the same REALE family even staying far away from each.
Another is to broaden their outlook and update their sense of values by communicating with children living in completely different environments.  

Furthermore, thay had a big challenge to communicate in English this time!

At past online meetings there was support from translators. From this time they tried to make full use of their English vocabulary to communicate.
Because REALE kids in Japan attend weekly English classes starting in July, and we hope they have experiences practicing at real meetings with Nepali kids.

On the other hand Nepali kids receive education in English from kindergarten. But they don’t have many chances to speak English because they learn mainly reading and writing in school and some of them are too shy to speak in front of Japanese kids.

We hope this exchange meeting would be a chance for them to come in touch with English as a communication tool, not as a study.

And it is about the day of the exchange meeting.It was Nepali school uniforms that Anish coach prepared for a presentation to introduce different common sense and culturesbetween two countries.
It is normal to wear a uniform in both public and private schools in Nepal, not like in Japan.

“Is it so ? No uniform in Japan?”
It seemed a bit of a culture shock to Nepali kids that Japanese kids go to school in plain clothes.

After that, a kid from each country came in front of the screen, challenging English conversation!

How old are you?
What is your favorite subject?
What color do you like? 

With support from coaches they tried to start communicating in English.
Compared to last year, it seemed Japanese kids could deliver messages a bit more in English.

Through this experience it seemed their interest in English has changed. Never expect improvement in English without a challenge to speak.We will hold the exchange meeting once a month from now on.
